After a ten year accumulation of horse data, the time has come to wind down THE WATCH. Ten years ago in 2015, we started to record (on paper at first) the performances in detail of several horses whose handling did not fit the mode of The Sport of Kings, such as:
AURORA’S SECRET (2004G), an 11 year
old at the time. For the balance of 2015 from June 27 through December 25, he
raced 12 times. Aurora’s Secret was rescued in June of 2017 by One Last Race.
Aurora’s Secret also has our record number of lifetime races – at 151. One
Hundred Fifty One.
ADDAR (20011M) who also had 12
races in the same period, but at the age of 4 at the time. She was ultimately
found at slaughter in 2018, but rescued and retired to a NC farm.
Soon THE WATCH (eyesareon.blogspot.com) was placed into a
Google blog, which has grown to accommodate the performance data in detail of a
total 906 horses - a trifling number of horses chosen from millions of
thoroughbred race horses, but representative of too large a part of our current
culture and the horse racing business today.
Of those 906 horses, I have found only 200 that have been
rescued or retired. That is 22 percent. Of that 906, a total 77 horses (8.5
percent) have been formally Retired from Racing by the Jockey Club. Unless
someone out there knows the whereabouts of any horse listed in THE WATCH on
Sheets A-H, I-O, P-Z, the remaining 78 percent of those horses have dropped from
sight. If you know anything about one of these horses, please advise to

The latter inspired the Trainer Watch, which started in
August of 2015 and covered a selection of trainers for periods of 3 months to
the entire period up to 2025. With that Trainer Watch, Sheet 2 “U.S. Horses in
Puerto Rico” has become imperative to record until there is NO HORSERACING
ANYWHERE IN PUERTO RICO. Please scan every detail of this sheet, which has two
sections. One records (starting in 2021) the last U.S. race, owner, trainer and
track of each horse claimed or sold to Puerto Rico. The second records the
horses who have never raced in the U.S. and are now racing in Puerto Rico (also
starting in 2021).
This “U S Horses in Puerto Rico” will continue to be maintained, as will the 8 active horses remaining on THE WATCH. Two trainers will remain for Watching until they no longer train a horse. As is well known by now, Notcloudyallday has been reporting a Silent Watch on more horses not part of the blog. This will also continue as long as possible.
Mention must also be made of the BREEDING of today’s thoroughbreds. Breeding IS and must
remain an art form. It may not continue to be a money-maker with no thought to
the results of careless breeding selection. These magnificent, loving beings who
have spent nine centuries serving us must return to the masterpieces they once
were. PLEASE.
Much gratitude must be given to those admirable individuals and rescue sites who have, together, formed a little army on Twitter to work #ForTheHorse and to improve the business that was once and must again become The Sport of Kings.
